The Studio–Relational Approach

There are many approaches to art therapy. At Good Light Art Therapy, I work from a studio–relational model, which centers on creating a safe, welcoming studio space where creativity becomes part of the therapeutic relationship.

In this approach, art-making is not an “add-on,” but an essential way of exploring emotions, patterns, and experiences that can be hard to access through words alone. You are invited to play, take creative risks, and gently engage with what may be keeping you stuck.

What Guides the Work

Art-making is central.
Creating with your hands offers a whole-brain way of understanding yourself. You don’t have to do this alone! I make art alongside you as we explore together.

The relationship is dynamic.
The work unfolds through the relationship between you, me, and the art materials or studio space. At times I will offer guidance; at other moments, you may be encouraged to follow your intuition or let the materials lead.

Both process and artwork matter.
The experience of creating supports mindfulness, regulation, and self-expression. Over time, your artwork may also reveal themes, symbols, and meaning that offer insights to challenges outside of the studio. Developing skill with materials can build confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

The studio supports curiosity.
The studio is intentionally designed to invite exploration. Once we identify the focus of a session, you are welcome to move through the space and choose materials that feel supportive and meaningful.

Play is essential at every age.
Play allows self-consciousness to soften and curiosity to emerge. Through play and creative flow, insight often feels more accessible, and connection to yourself and to others deepens.
